About the Author
Andy Keusal is passionate about using his teaching gift to help others reach their God-given potential. He spent 18 years in commercial banking, during which he interviewed, hired, and trained hundreds of new bankers. He also helped build and run one of the nation's premier credit training programs at a large Midwest regional bank. He left his corporate career in 2015 to found Keusal Learning, where he now helps people master the basics of banking. Many of his trainees have moved on to prosperous careers in banking, private equity, and even business ownership. As a husband and father of nine children, Andy devotes much of his time and energy to helping his wife Kirsten educate their eight children still living at home. Ordained as an Elder in the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Andy is also actively involved in his local church. The Keusal family lives on a five-acre homestead in central Ohio.

I have never written a book review. However, given how extraordinary this book along with the author is, I would be doing a disservice by not spreading the gospel of the magic in this book. I came across this book when I started my career in the commercial real estate banking industry. Given that I have my law degree, Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Public Policy, I never thought I would end up in a career in banking. Prior to banking, my experience was in politics and the energy industry. Because I was not finding the career I was becoming satisfied within those industries, I worked my way into commercial banking. Now, I am being groomed for higher roles by my bank and I came across this book to help my training. This 150-ish page book outweighs what I learned about the banking, commerce and finance industries in my respective education. As you read this book, you will feel as if the author is talking to you directly like a coach. More importantly, it is preparing you how to beat out your competition. I read this book in approx. 3 hours and can fully state that this book catapulted my knowledge tenfold about the banking industry. After reading this book and having discussions about spreads, loan structuring and underwriting principles my bosses were impressed by my level of depth on these subjects. The author really took their time to provide a clear and simple voice which will suit any level comprehension. Overall, I highly recommend this book and commend the author for writing this “Bible†per say for commercial credit analysts who are seeking to grow.
I read this book to prepare for an interview for my first credit analyst position and this helped tremendously. This book gave a vey nice breakdown of the need-to-know concepts, calculations, terms and definitions. I would highly suggest anyone trying to break into the commercial lending industry to read this book. I would also make this a must read for new recruits if I were a commercial Lending manager. The author also gives help advice in securing a job in this industry. At only 150 pages, this is a must read
This book definitely accomplishes it's goal, would recommend to anyone looking to break into commercial banking. It's an easy and interesting read that gives an excellent overview of commercial banking, with an emphasis on the credit analyst role. For someone like myself looking to transition into the commercial banking industry, I feel this book has prepared me to enter into knowledgeable conversations with recruiters while having zero previous banking experience.
This book provides a great introduction into the world of commercial lending. Andy Keusal really breaks down the different aspects of lending and credit analysis using easy to read and understand language. I have trained 7 analysts over the last 5 years and this is the first training tool I use in my program. Everyone I have trained to date has praised this book as really helping them ready for the job and often refer back to the materials.
I wish I knew this book existed years ago when I first embarked on my banking career. Would recommend to anyone looking to work in banking.
This book is intended for people considering a career in commercial banking or for brand new employees in a Credit Analyst role at a commercial bank. It is extremely informative, while being written in an approachable style. Ever since discovering it in early 2016, I've made it required reading for all newly hired Credit Analysts in my department.
